| Do your holiday shopping while waiting for the boat
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- They've decked the halls at Whitehall. The first ever holiday fair will open tomorrow in Manhattan's Whitehall Ferry Terminal, to offer commuters a convenient way of squeezing in some gift shopping on the way home. Though the 37 vendors will be set up only on the Manhattan side, wreaths, trees and menorahs, garland and bows have been going up in both ferry terminals, to spruce up the waiting rooms and add a touch of holiday cheer. The fair will run through Christmas Eve, and will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Caravelle Designs will offer humorous gifts, such as nose-shaped eyeglass holders; tiny clawfoot-tub-shaped "bird baths;" mousepads that look like vintage postcards and stamps; miniature facades of actual city firehouses, and funny tissue box holders.
Eating Disorders In Adolescents
A new study, one of the first to examine trends in adolescent weight control behaviors over a 10-year period, found that the prevalence of these behaviors in male adolescents significantly increased, while black females appear to resist pressure to pursue thinness. Led by Y. May Chao of Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT, researchers examined data from nationally representative samples of high school students from 1995 to 2005. The data was available via the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS), a survey conducted every two years since 1991 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to assess the prevalence of health-risk behaviors among teens. The results showed that the prevalence of dieting and diet product use among female adolescents significantly increased between 1995 and 2005 and as did the prevalence of all weight control behaviors (including dieting, diet product use, purging, exercise and vigorous exercise) among males.
J.K. says she didn't demand money from charity in India
Recently there were a number of reports that Warner Bros. and I had taken legal action against religious charities in India because they constructed a Hogwarts castle as part of a Hindu festival. Here are the facts. The defendants were not religious charities, and theirs was not a religious celebration. On the contrary, it was a large-scale, commercial, sponsored event involving corporations that included a major Indian high street bank. The event was, however, set up while a Hindu festival was going on. It was Warner Bros who brought the case, because the rights that were being infringed belong to them, not me. My name has to be attached to such proceedings as a legal technicality, because I am the underlying creator of Harry Potter series. Also due to a technicality, Warner Bros were obliged to claim damages as part of their claim.
Joining the rotters' club
On one of those lovely autumn days in October, I spent a day with a new client, walking their land. The night before had been the first cold one and it had broken the short spell of the Indian summer. We travelled down on the train, through a smog that muffled the suburbs, but soon, as we moved into open pasture, I realised that the fog was not the shroud it had appeared to be in the city but a magical, mysterious mist. Your framed view of the sky is so reduced in the city that it can feel like a lid on the world, whereas in the country the same grey skies can be seen to their full extent, turning seemingly oppressive weather conditions into things of great beauty. And so the day opened up as the train sped towards our destination, the cover becoming more luminous and then breaking into brilliant pockets of sunlight, one of those perfectly still autumn days when you can hear every leaf drop.

JOB OPENINGS
LOS ANGELES (AP) Hollywood's highest-profile custody case was back in court Friday, with a lawyer for Britney Spears winning a motion to bar videotaping of depositions. Spears and ex-husband Kevin Federline were under court order to appear later in the day at another hearing to work out custody arrangements for their two young sons. Spears' lawyer, Thomas Paine Dunlap, argued that video of the depositions would almost certainly wind up on YouTube. He said his celebrity client had a right to be protected from that exposure. Superior Court Commissioner Scott Gordon made his ruling in spite of his concern that she is constantly courting "an inordinate amount of media," which he said runs counter to her expressed desire for privacy. Dunlap countered that the pop star was not trying to create media attention.
