Shop online to help limit spending

With Black Friday behind us and so-called Cyber Monday upon us, holiday shopping is the No. 1 spending topic of the moment. It will be an $817 extravaganza for the average shopper, not including special spending on themselves, according to the National Retail Federation.

How can you control holiday spending this year, while feeling satisfied that you imparted the right amount of holiday gift joy?

One way is to shop online, which can be more time-efficient and curb impulse spending. Without the sights, sounds and smells of enticing retail displays, you might actually stick to a shopping list if you're sitting at your computer.

'Shangaan women can braid hair, hands down'

"Woza sisi, wozobona [Come sister, come and see]," say the braiders on the corner of Kerk and Eloff streets in downtown Johannesburg.Hundreds of women congregate here every day to provide a vital service to the city's female residents: braiding. At first, anyone could set up shop in this bustling pedestrian mall, flanked by furniture shops. Now, however, there are so many braiders that they have to apply for a permit to work in the area. There are women from almost any Southern African country one could care to name -- Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Angola -- and all have been driven to sit on a cheap plastic chair in the centre of Johannesburg because they make more money here than many of their countrymen will make in a month.Porschia Ncube (46), a teacher from Zimbabwe, says her colleagues in Bulawayo earn Z$3-million (about R680) a month, which she can make in three hours.Competition is fierce.

Maldives Diary

There was a time when Brits only spoke about going to Barbados, St. Lucia or other Caribbean holiday places. The general rule of thumb appeared to be that if you were not very rich you went to Greece, to the Canary Islands or some nearby destination. But if you had money you flew off to the West Indies. (And if you were really snobbish you referred to Barbados as 'The Barbados' - don't ask me why, may be it's like "the Punjab").

Over the last decade or so, the Maldives have replaced the West Indies as the upper class Brit destination of choice. You can hardly open British Vogue, Harper's Bazaar or Conde Nast Traveller without finding some reference to the Maldives. When starlets run away from the paparazzi, they seek refuge in the Maldives. When stars plan big parties in the tropics, they look for islands in the Maldives.
