Sepang: Friday Quotes 23/11/2007 Brazil A1 Team Brasil kicked off the third round of the 2007/08 A1GP World Cup of Motorsport in a positive fashion today at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia. Sergio Jimenez, driving at the track for the first time, finished second fastest in each of this morning's rookie practices, behind A1GP double-race winner Oliver Jarvis, and followed that up with a strong seventh position in this afternoon's one-hour session. The main aim of this morning's first 25-minute rookie practice for Sergio was to learn the tricky 5.54km Sepang circuit, and he proved a quick learner as he topped the timesheets half way through the session. Team GBR's Jarvis was the only driver able to improve on Sergio's time and, with the final three minutes of the session cancelled due to a red-flag, the Team Brasil driver did not have time to respond.
Councilman reports to Pikesville Chamber of Commerce
Pikesville Chamber of Commerce: Councilman Kevin Kamenetz, serving his fourth term on the County Council 2nd District, was the chamber's interesting guest speaker. He gave his annual update to chamber members regarding Pikesville. The revitalization of Pikesville continues as the County Council enacted Kamenetz's bill for the Pikesville Revitalization District Redevelopment Incentive Fund, which offers property owners and developers up to $1 million toward commercial redevelopment projects in downtown Pikesville. Targeted is the revitalization of vacant or underutilized commercial properties in the Pikesville Revitalization District. The first grant approved was the purchase of the former Mr. Chan site at 1006-1009 Reisterstown Road, now undergoing renovation for another restaurant, Mari Luna Mexican Grill, originally located at the former Carvel site.
Disney pokes fun at its own tales with 'Enchanted'
"Enchanted" HHH (out of four). Directed by Kevin Lima. Starring Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, Susan Sarandon, James Marsden, Rachel Covey and Timothy Spall. Rated PG for some scary images and mild innuendo. Running time: 107 minutes. Surely this was inevitable. After years of watching the monstrously successful "Shrek" franchise parody everything beloved about those classic animated Disney movies, Disney is showing a sense of humor and making fun of itself. "Enchanted" has a song in its heart and a tongue in its cheek — both in animated and live-action forms — with an infectious energy that helps overcome the script's contrivances. Wide-eyed, would-be princess Giselle (the irresistible Amy Adams) is banished by the wicked Queen Narissa (Susan Sarandon) from her idyllic cartoon playland to the harsh reality of Times Square before she can marry her one true love, Prince Edward (James Marsden).
Novato's 'She Loves Me' is quite lovely
There is a great line in the movie "Roxanne," Steve Martin's modern adaptation of "Cyrano de Bergerac," where Martin is asked by co-workers why he's in such a good mood all of a sudden, and Martin replies, "Because yesterday she didn't and today she does." It is a wonderful movie that shares the same sort of buoyancy that carries along the stage musical, "She Loves Me," another great love story now in revival at the Novato Theater Company's Pacheco Playhouse, through Nov. 18. Anyone who's felt it knows exactly what Martin was talking about. We're not talking a merely speculative, petal-plucking "She loves me, she loves me not." We're talking a stop-the-presses, hold-the-phone, cancel-my-tango-lessons, jostle-the-postman (fling the mail!), shout-it-from-the-rooftops kind of she loves me.
Chantille Hallenbeck, senior, Granite Falls volleyball
Chantille Hallenbeck dreams of becoming the next Miss Washington Teen USA, but in the meantime she's busy flinging her body across the volleyball court to spoil her foes' spikes. The thrill-seeking Hallenbeck loves going for a dig, a defensive move in which a player uses one or both hands to bump a ball hit by an opponent and keep a rally going. "I like playing in the back row because there's a lot of diving and more hustle (required)," she said. "If it's a good hitter, you really want to go for it. When you get a dig, it makes you feel good." Coach's corner Hallenbeck, a 5-foot-7 team co-captain, is a three-year varsity team member who makes a broad impact, Granite Falls coach Mark Neuman said. Hallenbeck's best skill is setting up teammates.
What ever happened to Miss Indian Territory?
The party was over and it was back to work in 1907 following the original Statehood Day, much like this week following the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the event. Muskogee was well represented at the festivities with the city claiming the first governor of Oklahoma, Charles Haskell. The woman who portrayed Miss Indian Territory during the symbolic marriage of the two territories on the steps of Guthrie's Carnegie Library was Mrs. Leo Bennett, also of Muskogee. At the time, she was usually referred to by her married name and it was reported that her husband was a federal marshal. But what about this woman and what did life hold for her in the new state of Oklahoma? The 1900 Census lists Anna C. Williams as being one-half Cherokee. Her Dawes Enrollment Card lists her as being 1/16.
The politics of remembering Ground Zero
NEW YORK - Michael Arad achieved the dream of many architects: He won the competition to design the memorial to the victims of September 11, 2001, in Manhattan. If he had thought, somewhat naively, that his plans would be implemented in the format he envisioned, he was quickly disillusioned. Arad, a young architect who seemed steeped in euphoria and quite astounded by his win, became caught up in an imbroglio of politicians, architects, public officials and interest groups. "So many forces are interested in influencing this site," says Arad. "New York State, New York City, the memorial organizations of the victims' families - some of which support the project, while others oppose it. There are a great many architects with connections. Even though this is a memorial for a tragedy, it is also real estate, and real estate is a very expensive matter in New York.
$2 mln bail for designer Anand Jon on rape charges
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Los Angeles judge set bail at $2.095 million on Wednesday for celebrity fashion designer Anand Jon who has been held in jail on charges of raping or sexually assaulting 20 young would-be models. Jon, 33, a rising designer who has dressed socialite Paris Hilton and singer Janet Jackson, is charged with 59 counts involving 20 women between the ages of 14 and 27 between 2002 and March 2007. Lawyers for Jon, who has denied the charges, said it could take a few days to post bail. Jon will also have to submit to electronic monitoring and is barred from having any contact with women under 21, or leave the Los Angeles area without permission. Jon is accused of luring women to Los Angeles with the promise they could work as models and then attacking them.
